Early Childhood Specialist, Part-Time

Description:
The Early Childhood Specialist is responsible for outreach and programming for children, with an emphasis on infants through kindergarteners. This position is under the supervision of the Head of Children’s Services and responsibilities also include staffing public service desks, collection development, participation on Library committees and team projects.

Responsibilities:
● Plans and presents a robust schedule of children’s programs both in-house and at community schools with an emphasis on early literacy
● Participates with the Head of Children’s Services in the formulation, development and completion of departmental and library-wide objectives
● Maintains a positive relationship with the library’s customers and staff
● Assists with special projects and other tasks as needed
● Participates on committees within the library
● Maintains attractive children’s spaces, including updating books displays
● Provides exceptional customer service at information desks
● Represents the Library at community events
● Follows guidelines for maintaining order in the library
● Prioritizes professional development through attendance at informational and instructional meetings and workshops
● Performs all other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
● A Bachelor’s Degree is required. Major in education or related field preferred. Candidates with a Master’s in Library Science will be considered at the Junior Librarian title.
● Successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for working with young people from birth through elementary school and a familiarity with children’s literature.
● Experience in early childhood education or working with children in an educational or recreational setting is strongly preferred.
● Ability to communicate clearly, courteously, and effectively with library patrons and staff.
● Ability to travel between library buildings, as well as to local schools and other outreach opportunities.

Schedule:
Approximately 17 hours per week, including morning and evening hours. Up to two Saturdays per month. Opportunity for additional hours on a substitute basis.

Compensation:
This is a non-salaried position offering $27.86/hour for bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and/or three years experience in early education, or $33.09/hour hour for a librarian with MLS and New Jersey professional certification.

Teen Services Librarian, Kennedy Branch

Description:
The Teen Services Librarian maintains a robust schedule of programming for young people in grades 6-12 with an emphasis on maker programming and STEM-engagement in diverse communities. This position is under the supervision of the Head of Adult & Teen Services and will include some general adult reference responsibilities as well.

Piscataway is home to the Busch and Livingston campuses of Rutgers University-New Brunswick, and several large corporations including Johnson & Johnson, Colgate-Palmolive and IEEE. The Kennedy Branch Library Teen Space is located adjacent to our newly-relocated Make it Yourself Lab, the first public library makerspace in NJ. The Teen Services Department at Piscataway Public Library consists of two full-time and one part-time Teen Services librarian positions that serve the community through two branches. The Piscataway Township School District includes three middle schools and a high school located approximately a half mile from Kennedy Branch. Piscataway Public Library is a statewide leader in public library service and has a tradition of providing pioneering programs and services. Piscataway Public Library nurtures professional development, leadership and innovation.

Responsibilities:
● Providing exceptional customer service to all patrons
● Representing the library at community events
● Planning, promoting, implementing and evaluating a variety of programs and services that meet the diverse educational, recreational and personal interests and needs of teens including STEM and maker learning opportunities
● Developing and maintaining effective relationships with teens in the community to improve the library’s ability to offer appropriate materials, programs and services
● Developing and maintaining effective relationships with schools, community groups, agencies and nonprofits that serve teens
● Maintaining and evaluating programming statistics
● Collaborating with other library departments to develop and administer programs and services
● Continuing education to update professional skills via workshops and online webinars
● Active participation in professional library associations
● Selecting and ordering materials for young adult collections that serve the specific interests and needs of the teens in the community (in collaboration with other staff)
● Effectively offering assistance in the informational needs of all ages, as well as computer support and readers advisory
● Performs all other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
● Master’s Degree in Library Science (or equivalent) from an ALA accredited program
● NJ Professional Librarian’s Certificate
● Experience working with youth ages 12-18
● Knowledge of developmental, recreational and educational needs of young adults
● Knowledge of best practices and trends in teen services, including guidelines and standards published by ALA, YALSA and other recognized organizations
● Demonstrated experience in the following areas: flexibility, initiative, teamwork, customer service, providing reference and technology assistance, and teen programming
● Ability to communicate clearly, courteously, and effectively with library patrons and staff

Schedule:
The schedule for this position is 35 hours per week, including a regular evening, and weekend coverage on a rotating basis.

Compensation:
This is a full-time salaried position, with a minimum starting salary of $60,217. Piscataway Public Library offers generous paid leave, health and dental insurance, PERS, and a commitment to staff training and development.
